What is the Environmental Fund?

The Environmental Fund is a single fund, created by the program of the XXI Constitutional Government, based on ensuring greater effectiveness in environmental policy. The Environmental Fund concentrates the resources of all existing funds, with the aim of being an instrument with greater financial capacity and greater adaptability to the challenges posed.

With the creation of the Environmental Fund in 2017, the Portuguese Carbon Fund, the Environmental Intervention Fund, the Fund for the Protection of Water Resources and the Fund for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity were abolished.

Later, in 2021, the Permanent Forest Fund, the Innovation Support Fund, the Energy Efficiency Fund and the Fund for the Systemic Sustainability of the Energy Sector were also abolished and added to the Environmental Fund.

Mission

The Environmental Fund's mission is to support environmental and climate action policies for the pursuit of sustainable development objectives by financing entities, activities or projects in various areas.

In this way, the Environmental Fund seeks to actively contribute to the fulfillment of national and international objectives and commitments, in particular those relating to:

Climate change;
Renewable energy sources;
Energy efficiency;
Water resources;
Waste;
Nature conservation and biodiversity;
Pet animal welfare;
Forestry and forest management;
Landscape planning and management.

Management Entity

The managing entity of the Environmental Fund is the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action, which provides the technical, administrative and logistical support necessary for the Fund to operate.
